The Abydos funerary temple to the glory of Sety I, the great pharaoh of the 18th dynasty, presents an original architecture in the shape of an "L" that is not found elsewhere. After crossing two successive courtyards, one enters the two hypostyle halls of the sanctuary, supported by tight rows of papyrus columns 8 metres high. The interior walls, made of fine limestone, display some of the finest carved and painted bas-reliefs in Egypt. It is located in Abydos, about 170 kilometres north of Luxor and 15 kilometres west of the Nile.
